He may be preparing to take guard at the top of Somerset’s order for a 27th season - but Marcus Trescothick says he is not thinking about hanging up his bat anytime soon.

The 43-year-old made his County Championship debut in 1993 and insists he is as hungry as ever to continue playing for his home county.

Trescothick, from Keynsham, has scored 52 first-class centuries in his long and illustrious career and despite scoring just 491 runs last year in a season hampered by a broken metatarsal, he says he is fit and raring to go ahead of the start of the new season.

“I am looking forward to going i-nto my 27th season,” said Tresco thick, who was helping to celebrate Taunton and The County Ground as hosts of CWC19 by placing a graffiti mural in a public space.

“I can’t wait to get going and it will be nice to get some sunshine and get the season started.

“The weather has been really disappointing in recent times and it is nice when the sun is out. I am fit and ready to go this season after my foot injury last season. I just hope the body holds up for another year.

“I am not looking past this year at the moment, we will see how it goes.

“I have never put a timeline on things and we will see how I feel. I enjoy it as much as ever.

“As long as I am good enough and as long as I am enjoying it then I will continue.”

His age and experience could

prove to be a big benefit for Somerset and Trescothick says he enjoys helping the younger players in the team.

The 2005 Ashes winner is keen to help the next generation of players a-t Taunton and hopes they can ful fil their potential.

He added: “I do quite a bit of coaching with the team as well and

that has given me another avenue.

“It is another opportunity to help players out and it’s good to see the young players come through and watching them progress is very nice.

“Hopefully they can step up and fill the boots of the senior players.

“We have so many good players, but Lewis Gregory is our one-day captain and he has been away with the England Lions and had a good time. And Jamie Overton and Craig Overton are the other two that are

w-orth keeping an eye on this sea son.”

Somerset finished second in the County Championship last season behind runaway winners Surrey, and Trescothick hopes they can go one better and win their first title. ■■ ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan, commences 100-day tour of England and Wales and will be at over 100 locations and events before arriving back in London ready for the opening match on May 30.
