Flanker pens contract extension for ninth Bath campaign
Francois Louw has signed a oneyear contract extension with Bath Rugby.
The South African flanker hopes to make it into the Springboks’ World Cup squad -for Japan this autumn before giving his all in the Blue, Black and White.
Now 33, Louw arrived from the Stormers in Super Rugby in 2011 and has since established himself as one of the most important players in the squad.
Such are the perils of being an openside constantly scavenging for ball, Louw hasn’t been a stranger to injuries but thus far this season has played in many of the Bath’s big games and has now passed 130 appearances for the club.
“I am delighted to have extended my stay at this club for another year,” said Louw.
“It has been a privilege and honour t-o play for Bath over the last eight sea sons and to be a part of shaping the club’s long-term future is something I’m really excited about.
“Thank you to everyone for your continuous support.”
Louw has 65 caps for his country. When the Chronicle discussed his international future in December, Louw said he had not yet committed to a decision on what he intends to do after the World Cup, which will cause next season’s Gallagher Premiership to start in October rather than Sep tember.
Bath’s director of rugby Todd Blackadder said: “Francois is one of those players that every coach wants in their team.
“He is not only a world-class player, but he brings the leadership qualities which will continue to drive us forward as a team.”
The director of rugby added: “He h-as also been integral in the develop ment of some of the younger players in the back row, with Sam Underhill, Zach Mercer, Josh Bayliss and Miles R-eid all able to draw upon his experi ences as a player.
“I know this news is going to go d-own well with the Bath Rugby sup porters, who have had the fortune of watching him down at the Rec for the last eight years.”
