Man left in agony after he chews on crisp bag stone

A man in Bath got an unwanted surprise when he tried to polish off his ‘Deluxe’ bag of Lidl crisps – as well as major pain.

The last thing Ben Hallman expected was to bite down on a stone after tipping the remaining crumbs from the bottom of the bag into his mouth.

Mr Hallman, an office worker from Oldfield Park, bought the 150g bag of ‘Deluxe ridge cut sea salted crisps’ from Lidl on Lower Bristol Road, Bath, before Christmas.

He has bought the same brand of crisps before, but was left speechless by his latest purchase.

Mr Hallman said: “I couldn’t believe it. You don’t expect to find or look for stones in a bag of crisps.”

He described eating most of the crisps before reaching the point where he could tip the remaining smaller pieces into his mouth straight from the bag.

However, he bit straight into a small stone about “the size of a fingernail” during his final mouthful.

He said: “It immediately really hurt. I already had a dentist appointment booked and it was touch and go as to if I wanted to bring it forward.

“I had major toothache and shooting pains that would come and go on the tooth affected. I had to take painkillers to help with the pain.

“Toothache kills and I hoped it would go away. It’s been six weeks now and it still hurts.”

He visited his dentist but did not require any fillings.

However, he is now looking to Lidl for answers.

He contacted the supermarket chain as soon as he discovered the stone in his packet of crisps.

Mr Hallman said: “I emailed Lidl about the fact there’d been a stone in my bag of crisps and they replied asking for some further info.

“I have sent two following emails and got auto-responses which confirm my correspondence reached them.

“In my last message I said I will contact the media if they don’t respond. I even offered to bring the stone and bag to my local Lidl store manager.”
