We’ve made a good start to leaving EU

-

Maurice Chivers (Feb 6th) suggested we ask “our man in Westminster” to identify immediate Brexit benefits.

However Maurice must know that Bath voted for a female Lib Dem MP who in addition to sounding

increasingly irrelevant remains rabidly anti Brexit.

I’d be surprised if she was keen to identify anything positive about Brexit.

Nevertheless there are two immediate Brexit transition period benefits which are real for me.

Firstly, the impact on the SNP and their separation message in Scotland has now picked up pace.

They have lost the lifeboat of EU membership and we will see the gradual decline of their divisive message over the next few years.

This decline is being hastened by some very unpleasant revelations about ex Finance Minister Derek Mackay and the upcoming High Court jamboree involving Alex Salmond’s alleged sexual misconduct.

The Union is immediately stronger as a result of Brexit.

Secondly, as a consequence of continuing UK economic growth and demand for labour we now see semi skilled wages increasing faster than inflation.

Employers are coming to terms with the new reality that requires them to think long term about skilling our young people to enjoy meaningful and fulfilling work.

This is rather more difficult for employers than shipping in another batch of educated and English speaking employees from the EU as and when required.

The extrapolation of this trend will be good for our school leavers, particularly those keen to directly enter the workforce rather than heading to university.

I look forward to more benefits over time but I have no illusions about the size of the task that our Government has on its hands.

Brexit was never going to be easy but we have made a good start. Dave Workman Wellow
