French through to final four of competition

-

In the aftermath of Storm Dennis, Bath Golf Club’s seniors played a three ball bowmaker stableford with the best two scores to count.

It is a credit to the greens staff and the nature of the course that play was possible and ten teams of three took part in mainly dry but blustery conditions.

The winners with a fine 76 points were Alan Buxton, Simon Brown and Mike Charlton. Second with 68 were Geoff Frankcom, Chris Perry and Phil Scilly with Paul Selley, Mike Power and Christopher Loveluck third on 66.

Bath is holding an academy day on Saturday, March 28 from 11am1pm. A warm welcome will be extended to anyone who is interested in trying golf. No experience necessary. There will be free coaching from PGA qualified staff and free tea and coffee. ■ APPROACH - John Vowles completed his Division One programme with a comprehensive win over Sue Norris. Norris won the first hole but had a long wait to repeat it as Vowles proceeded to win seven of the next eight and lead by a massive six holes at the turn and although Norris took closer order coming back, Vowles eased to victory with five remaining.

Colin Lee enhanced his chances of promotion from Division Two with a superb win over previously unbeaten Peter Flann. Lee dominated the front to build up a three hole lead at the turn. Coming back, Lee played at his best and although Flann also improved, he was unable to stop Lee taking the match on the 13th.

Terry Gleeson and Simon Ingram-hill fought a very keen contest, with Ingram-hill achieving a creditable draw which was enough for Gleeson to qualify for the quarter finals of the League Cup. Ingram-hill made a splendid start winning the first two and held on to lead at the turn. Gleeson went up a gear at the start of the back and went 2Up with four remaining but Ingram-hill responded to level on the 18th.

Malcolm French eventually overcame Brian Lambern’s heroic resistance to progress to the semi finals of the KO Cup. Lambern was surprisingly ahead at the turn and after 11 holes, but he weakened and French stepped in to win the next three to lead by two. Immediately Lambern stubbornly halved the margin but French prevailed on the final two to go through.

Bob Mcgregor had to come from behind to scramble into the semifinals at the expense of John Vowles. It was all square at the turn and still close coming back with Vowles edging ahead with three remaining, only for Mcgregor to regroup and win the next two before hanging on for victory.

Craig Jones handled the adverse conditions better than Reg Morris to secure his first win in the Supplementary Cup, leaving Morris rooted to the bottom. A birdie on the 7th put Jones 3Up but, coming back, an improved Morris cut the deficit to one with three remaining but the determined Jones won the next two for a fine victory.

Mike Fear recovered from losing the first five to force a draw with Brian Woodford, but the dropped point removed Fear from top spot. Woodford was nett par after five and 5Up, however Fear provided a superb response to level after 14. At this stage Woodford, who had been in the doldrums from the 6th, held Fear at bay by halving the final four to halve the match.
