Jones takes latest Honors

-

Bath Golf Club ladies played a stableford over 12 holes in blustery conditions. Twenty-four took part with the course playing long, due to recent rain, and scoring wasn’t easy.

With a fine score of 25 points, the overall winner was Honor Jones. Under her, three scored 23 and, after countback, Jane Franke was second with Fay Galley third and Samantha Robinson fourth.

The men played a three-ball Texas Scramble medal. Eighteen teams of three took part in blustery conditions, with some holes playing very long into a strong breeze. Despite the conditions, scoring was good with David Cox, Rob Mcalister and Steve Plain winning on 63.7. Two teams tied on 64.7 and second on countback were Ian Hull, Richard Mccabe and David Sumison, ahead of Nigel Crichton, Steve Dewsnap and Chris Parkin.

Fourth on 65 were Adam Jolly, Liam O’mara and Matthew Wordon.

■ APPROACH - Newcomer Peter Flan became favourite to win the Division Two title after overcoming current leader Craig Jones. Jones made the better start and took an early three hole lead, but Flann replied by winning the next three before Jones retook the lead on the ninth. With Jones weakening, Flann took charge on the back winning another five without reply to triumph on the 16th.

Mike Fear had to battle hard over the back to overcome Colin Lee in the KO Cup. Fear’s masterful play on the front resulted in a five hole lead, but it all changed coming back where Lee suddenly cut his deficit to two with four remaining. Fear calmly birdied the next hole though and when Lee stubbornly won the 16th, Fear produced another birdie to win and reach the semi-finals.

Terry Selway and Terry Gleeson fought out a very competitive Plate contest with Selway eventually winning on the 17th to reach the semi-finals. Neither player could make any headway on the front, leaving the match all square, but Selway made a decisive break to lead by two and, although Gleeson determinedly cut the deficit to one on two occasions, Selway ensured victory on the 17th.

Malcolm French achieved a comfortable win over Sue Norris in the Supplementary Cup. French achieved a two hole lead on the front and improved before cantering to victory with four holes remaining.

Brian Woodford gained a comprehensive win over Brian Lambern to rise up the table. Woodford made a splendid start, dropping just one shot to par over the first five to lead by four, but a magnificent effort by Lambern kept Woodford in check over the next eight, leaving Lambern just four down after 13. However, Woodford put up more sail and sank Lambern with a top class finish.

Reg Morris, with his best round for several weeks, held on to defeat leader John Vowles. Morris’ fine play on the front helped to lead by four at the turn. Coming back, the roles were reversed with Vowles reducing his deficit to a single hole with three to play, only for Morris to double his lead.

Vowles kept in the match by winning the 17th before Morris comfortably halved the final hole to prevail.
