Learners enabled ‘to become work-ready’

- Nathalie Gannon Commercial writer nathalie.gannon@reachplc.com

It’s a very exciting time for the young apprentices of our area who are gearing up to hear the results of our annual apprenticeship awards. It is equally exciting for the training providers and companies that continually support the growth of apprentices in their chosen careers.

On Thursday, April 2, the finalists in the Bristollive & Bathlive Apprenticeship Awards will be announced and invited to attend the awards ceremony held at Ashton Gate Stadium on May 6.

We have received many enthusiastic nominations that have all highlighted the importance of apprenticeship schemes and how rewarding the participants have found their roles. As part of the awards, facilitators that enable these schemes to continue are also recognised.

The range and scope of apprenticeships available increases each year as skills-based learning as an alternative to university becomes more and more popular. Big companies are increasingly investing in a new wave of practical learners and are reaping the benefits of individuals who have received a focused and tailored education.

Bath College is one of the proud sponsors of this event and its continued relationships with large, established companies have offered many past students the best first steps towards a vibrant career. Many of the courses available at Bath College prepare students for large industries, including engineering, veterinary nursing, teaching and business administration to name just a few.

We spoke to Chris George, the assistant principal for business and technical skills at Bath College, about the importance of apprenticeships and what their previous learners have gone on to achieve.

Mr George said: “An apprenticeship provides a learner with the opportunity to create and build a live real-time CV that will showcase key skills and experience that will make them stand out from the crowd. This unique blend of learning equips individuals to become work-ready and able to continue and progress within their current workplace or move to a new employer with the full skills set they require.”

Previous students at the college have progressed to positions in top companies such as Center Parcs, Dyson and Siemens. One of the factors that has allowed the continued success of apprentices at Bath College is its continued cooperation with the West of England Combined Authority and its local employer partnerships.

The continued success of the apprentices studying at the college has led to increased investment in the college’s facilities.

Mr George: “Our top-class facilities and experienced teams from construction, digital, and IT and hospitality have secured ongoing investment to keep Bath College at the forefront of highend and up-to-date facilities that provide the perfect learning environments for apprentices to flourish and grow.”

At the upcoming apprenticeship awards there will be plenty of opportunity for companies looking to make an investment in apprenticeship schemes to network with current training providers such as Bath College.
