Put the brake on speeding drivers
Over the last couple of months I’m sure some of us have witnessed many drivers using nearly empty roads as race tracks – some in turbocharged 4x4s.
During that same time we were delighted to notice a roe deer near here raising a fawn.
Sadly, hearing a very fast car pass by on the A36 and a thump, I went to investigate and found a dying deer. Half an hour later we saw a solitary deer standing in Friary Wood just waiting.
When the UK speed limit is 70/60 what on earth is the rational explanation for any vehicle (except emergency services) being able to do in excess of the speed limit?
A few people may witter on about their ‘freedoms’ – presumably to flout the law and destroy animals, or humans, or whatever else gets in their way?
Isn’t it time for the UK Government to mandate that speed limiters at least are fitted – it might also slightly reduce noxious gasses and CO2 levels and help preserve us all.
We have a legal right to clean air, as well as a social one to feel safe on or near the highway.
Wouldn’t it be a sensible measure of self preservation, especially in a time of national emergency, to bring in an overall maximum limit of 50mph once and for all? Geoffrey Parkes Hinton Charterhouse
