Neighbours raise a cuppa to cause

-

Neighbours have proved you can still fundraise with friends during a pandemic with their socially distanced coffee morning.

Newbridge residents Jane Riekemann and GP Dr Christine Gibson raised £728 at their Macmillan Coffee Morning last Friday.

Keeping to the “Rule of 6”, they arranged tables and chairs in their Penn Lea Road front gardens, supported by other neighbours and friends who baked cakes and lent an additional garden.

Ms Riekemann said: “Organising an event to conform to the current guidelines was certainly a challenge. Luckily, the rain held off although it was blustery and a few meringues were blown off the cake tables. Our friends and neighbours seemed to enjoy chatting with each other in small groups spread over the three gardens.”

Dr Gibson said: “We wanted to do this because charities have been so badly hit by the Covid crisis and have struggled to raise the funds they need to keep on with their valuable work.”

She added: “We were astonished by the generosity of the donations, which certainly exceeded our expectations and what we’ve raised in previous years.”

Last year the coffee morning initiative raised £27,461,814, which Macmillan Cancer Support said would fund 516 Macmillan nurses for a year.
