Newcomer helps city to deliver on its green targets
A new eco-friendly way of having post delivered has now arrived in Bath.
WEGO Couriers has recently set up a local, zero-emission cargo bike delivery service to encourage people to buy locally and to make Bath a more cycle-friendly city.
The company has been running for more than 21 years and has now established a small parcel consolidation site in Bath on the London Road, near Morrisons.
WEGO arrived in Bath in October 2019 and really only became active after the lockdown restrictions were lifted in July of this year.
The firm moved to the area after winning a tender from Bath and North East Somerset Council to reduce pollution from freight traffic.
It is now delivering around 70 to 80 parcels a day by bike and uses high-speed rail and electric vans to transport packages around the UK to reach WEGO’S other sites in London, Leicester and Nottingham.
The team are encouraging online parcel delivery companies to work with them so that they can consolidate deliveries from diesel vans onto cargo trikes for the “final mile” in and around Bath.
They are currently working with YODEL to take its parcels, transfer them onto cargo bikes and take them on the last leg to their final destination. Chris Beattie, founder and owner of WEGO, said: “The bikes are perfect for the small, congested streets and to navigate around, even though they are hilly. We have to accommodate the hills but the bikes are perfect for that.
“It’s a steep learning curve, as steep as the hills in Bath!
“If we all still look to the car as the best solution we’re not going to get anywhere fast. As well as trying to solve the freight issues and challenges around pollution in Bath, we’re trying to look at the bigger picture and encourage a greater use of more sustainable transport.
“The planned Clean Air Zone restrictions will certainly help us to encourage more businesses to switch to a greener delivery option.”
The firm is also linking up with local retailers and carrying out a WEGO local home delivery service.
