Politically correct fashion

- joanne watkinson

Starved of fashion moments due to the pandemic preventing movie premieres, catwalk shows and other promotional juggernauts celebrities dress up for, I have been forced to get my sartorial kicks wherever I can lately.

My appetite for all things fashion was satisfied thanks to the inauguration of Kamala Harris as the first black and south-asian american woman vice President of the United States (along with Joe Biden as POTUS, of course, but that’s not the fun part).

Harris, 56, chose a regal-looking purple dress and jacket by Christopher John rogers for the event.

a-listers in attendance included Lady Gaga, who wore a custommade gown by Parisian couturier Schiaparelli to perform the american national anthem.

renowned for her avant-garde style, she looked every inch the superstar in a fitted navy cashmere jacket and full red silk skirt.

Never one to shy away from statement accessories, the academy award winner donned an oversized gold “dove of Peace” brooch.

But Gaga wasn’t the only singer on the bill.

Jennifer Lopez, another star who doesn’t swerve attention-grabbing looks, rocked up head to toe in white Chanel.

But her colourblocking effort was overshadowed by former First Lady, Michelle Obama in a burgundy coat and jumpsuit by Sergio Hudson, cinched in at the waist with a major gold buckle.

against all that star power, the show was stolen by 22-year-old National Youth Poet Laureate, amanda Gorman, who was invited to speak by new First Lady dr Jill Biden.

Wearing a red headband and a yellow Prada coat as a personal nod to dr Biden (she had seen a video of amanda wearing yellow previously) she was composed as she addressed the world.

the finishing touch to her outfit was the jewellery gifted to her by none other than america’s unofficial first lady, Oprah Winfrey. the bird cage ring and hanging diamond earrings were to honour another incredible inauguration poet, dr Maya angelou. among all the glitz and socially distanced glamour sat senator Bernie Sanders wearing a pair of homemade recycled grey mittens and sensible coat, and equilibrium was restored.
