Wilson included in weekly team after two goals

-

Donovan Wilson has made an explosive start to life at Sutton United with two goals in his last two starts.

The striker, on loan from Bath City, netted his first in a 1-0 win at King’s Lynn on Saturday, and repeated the trick in Tuesday’s victory at Chesterfield by the same scoreline.

Coupled with challengers Torquay United and Hartlepool United both recording only one win in their last five matches, Sutton now sit six points clear at the top of the National League having won eight of their last nine matches. They also have games in hand on five teams below them and the dream of a first ever promotion to the Football League is edging closer to reality.

Wilson, who turned 24 on Sunday, now has eight goals in nine starts this season for Bath and Sutton, who he joined after the National League South campaign ended prematurely.

A bid to restart Step 2 football was quashed on Friday as the FA Alliance Committee supported the National League resolutions for the termination of the season and rejecting an alternative competition.

Last month, 24 of 43 clubs in National Leagues North and South voted in favour of making the 2020/21 season null and void, but a group of 18 clubs signed an open letter for consideration to an alternative competition.

A mini-league was proposed with two promotion places on offer and each club playing each other once with a mathematically formulated points tally before it began.

Bath City were not one of those to support the proposal and manager Jerry Gill supported the FA’S decision.

He tweeted: “At last some sense and the only call the FA would and could make for NLS/NLN to remain null and void.

“The league is run for ALL the members and the FA are the only power to set the leagues. Now let’s all focus on building our squads for an uninterrupted 2021/2022 season.”
