Hundreds support bid to save bar

Hundreds of people have supported a planning application by a local pub trying to save its garden bar and decking area.

Last week, Joe Cussens, the landlord of the The Hare and Hounds pub in the Lansdown area of Bath, said he was “heartbroken” after being told he may have to remove a temporary garden bar and decking area which “saved their bacon” over lockdown.

The garden bar and decking area had been built in a “live and die” moment for the pub which incurred debts over successive lockdowns.

Mr Cussens, who is managing director of the Bath Pub company, which also owns the Marlborough Tavern and The Locksbrook Inn, said he had been left “baffled” after Bath and North East Somerset Council told him the whole thing may have to go.

He was told to apply for retrospective planning permission but was allegedly told that it was unlikely to be successful.

Around 250 people have now offered their support for the retrospective planning application, saying the outdoor area is an asset to the city of Bath. One person has objected.

One woman said it would be an “absolute travesty” if it had to go.

Last week, Tim Ball, the council’s cabinet member for housing, planning and economic development, said it was keen to work with Mr Cussens on finding an alternative.

One comment left on Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning portal by Diana Terry says: “This business has provided a safe public environment to continue to trade during the current crisis.

“B&NES needs business and employment to thrive and there is a need to be more flexible about the application of planning restraints.”

Sarah Clifford commented: “This is an absolute gem in the city of Bath! Even when the pandemic is history, it will still be so wonderful to sit out in the fresh air with the beautiful views!

“Bath doesn’t have enough outdoor venues. This one is peaceful and beautiful and to get rid of it would be an absolute travesty!”

Hilary Wright said it would be good for reducing air pollution, adding: “If the council is serious about reducing air pollution it should allow local pubs like the Hare and Hounds to adequately serve the local community. The increased capacity afforded by the garden bar is one way in which this can happen.

“The council needs to provide support to local entrepreneurs not curtail them at every opportunity.”

One person has objected to the application. Tom, who has not given a surname, said: “It is unfair on other business that cannot do the same. We all need to follow the rules.”

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Elliott said: “The pub is a much-loved and valued local business in Bath, and the hospitality industry has had a terrible time over the last 12 months.

“However, a retrospective application for a development in the grounds of a listed building does present some significant issues. We are working with Joe Cussens to achieve a common-sense outcome on this.”

Mr Cussens said he was “moved” by the extent of local support.

Speaking to Bath Live, he said: “I felt humbled by the reaction, we’ve had so many offers of help and support. The local councillors have been engaging positively with us about it and we’re trying to find a solution that will satisfy all parties.

“I do understand that the planning department have a job to do, yet I think this needs to be looked at with the bigger picture.”
