Trinity claim division title

- Mark Payne-blackmore

Odd Down Reserves responded from their 3-2 defeat at Frome Collegians last Wednesday with a fantastic footballing performance in a dominating 5-1 win over Melksham Town Reserves in the Fountain Trophies Senior Cup.

Will Harbinson scored a stunner to cap off a fine first-half display before Melksham came back strongly and equalised on 55 minutes. Odd Down’s relentless passing began to take its toll on the hosts though and chances became plentiful for the visitors.

Harvey Kendrick headed home the rebound after Judah had hit the bar to restore Odd Down’s lead before Kendrick soon added a second from a Charlie Saunders cross. Saunders completed his excellent cameo by scoring twice late on to secure a fantastic win over a muchfancied and more experienced Melksham side. Odd Down’s average age was just 18.

■ SOMERSET COUNTY LEAGUE

Fry Club have opened the door in Group C of the Senior Cup after being held to a goalless draw at Stockwood Wanderers. That’s allowed Keynsham Town Reserves to move within a point of Fry with a game in hand after they hammered Stockwood Green 7-1.

Substitute Harry Ollis netted a double alongside goals for Luke Banfield, Patrick Davison, Aaron Osborne, Samuel Simpson-jarman and fellow sub Dan Nash as Keynsham maintained their unbeaten start to the competition.

In the Junior Cup, Peasedown Miners Welfare put themselves back in contention in a tight Group A after beating local rivals Radstock Town Reserves 2-1. Radstock had Jordan Townsley on the scoresheet but saw Ellis Kingman sent off to leave both sides on six points after three points - three points behind leaders Glastonbury with a game in hand. Tunley remain without a point after losing 3-0 at the Dollies. ■ MID SOMERSET LEAGUE Weston suffered their first defeat of the campaign in Group 1, losing 4-0 at Evercreech Rovers to slip to third on goal difference. In Group 2, Timsbury Athletic Reserves enjoyed the result of the day with an 8-0 thrashing of High Littleton.

■ BATH SUNDAY LEAGUE Tuesday saw a whole host of matches. A super six from Olympic Victoria die them no harm in their late Division Two run in against Griffin, a hat-trick from Prates-pereira was doubled with a brace from Specian and a strike from the free-scoring Linford-wood; leaving Griffin with nothing but a partial consolation.

Gringos hosted Lansdown and the visitors kept pace in the title race winning 5-2 with strikes from Dennis (3) Barnes (1) and Priddle (1).

In Division Three, Two Weir Town were thrashed with another resounding six goals, losing 6-0 to Puckle Vale. Bayliss, Preddy, Fussel and Pidgeon all scored to add to a double from Godfrey and give the hosts no chance.

A strike from Rawlings for Farrington Albion was not enough as Clark and Corbin (2) meant Colchoneros won 3-1.

On Thursday, Heritage Reserves hosted Bear Flat in Division Three and lost 3-0.

In a fixture that usually offers so much, this time it was just a single goal from Corbiere that decided BAS’ 1-0 victory over Kingsmead in Division One on Sunday.

PF Loco had three separate scorers in Inglis, Charles and Howes, but those goals were not enough as their visiting opponents Batheaston managed to go one better winning the match 4-3

The only Division Two encounter was a title deciding game and Trinity made no mistakes, thumping the Vics in their final game of the campaign 5-0 to claim the title. Even defender Francis getting injured early - who we wish a speedy recovery - was not enough to stop Trinity with goals from Lakeman, Squire (2), Stanton and Davies.

While in the bottom league, Puckle Vale beat Bear Flat 5-1 with a brace from Shaw added to by Preddy, Iles and Parker. Heritage beat Welton Rangers 3-1 with a double from Ashcroft and strike from Edwards. Farrington fired four past Two Weir Town with no reply.

Lansdown were out of action at the weekend, and will be without the services of former Wembley winner Jake Ash for their final match of the season against Olympic Victoria this Sunday. The former Truro legend won the FA Vase with the White Tigers in 2007 and the 37-year-old made a dream debut against FC Trinity in a 1-1 draw two weeks ago.

Already signed on, he agreed to play following persuasion of best friend Andy Howard, the Lansdown manager who formerly attended Falmouth University with Ash.

“I managed to toe-poke one in and didn’t offer much else,” laughed Ash, who manages Mousehole in the South West Peninsula League. “Andy asked if I enjoyed playing and I told him no. He’d given me round-ups of their games most weeks and I was in the area with him for a game of golf before he talked me into it.

“I said I’d go on the bench and only wanted to come on as a last resort. I was running the line and enjoying myself. I was glad to help for the last 15 minutes but I have zero desire to play anymore.

“If there were any scouts watching they wouldn’t have taken much notice.”
