Muir rewarded by new two-year deal

Bath Rugby winger Will Muir has ‘snatched every opportunity’ available to him to earn a new two-year contract at the club, director of rugby Stuart Hooper has confirmed.

The Blue, Black and Whites looked outside the box for signings in the summer, snapping up England Sevens Men’s Player of the Year (2019) and NFL tight-end Alex Gray from the Atlanta Falcons.

After a period of learning the structure of the team, 25-year-old Muir earned his Gallagher Premiership debut as a replacement against Harlequins in February and has since continued to thrive as a regular starter.

Muir, who made his first European outing last weekend in the 10-19 defeat to Montpellier in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup, has scored five tries in his 10 Bath outings to date, forcing his way in front of the likes of Semesa Rokoduguni in the winger pecking order at Bath.

Hooper said: “Will came to us on a short-term deal with an opportunity to impress.

“He’s worked incredibly hard in training and then snatched every opportunity in front of him when he’s been on the field, so he’s earned himself a deal for the long-term.

“He’s a very popular member of the squad and is someone who the rest of the squad respect and enjoy playing with.”

Muir, who has been named as part of the GB Men’s Sevens squad to prepare for the Olympic games in Japan this summer, added: “I’m really pleased to have the chance to continue my journey with Bath,” Muir said.

“I’m still learning so much each game and I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to go out there and express myself.

“If I keep being hungry and keep trying to learn as much as I can, hopefully I’ll keep pushing on and help the team achieve its goals.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to play in front of the Bath supporters yet, but I’ve heard how great the Rec is when it’s packed on a matchday.

“To be able to play in front of a crowd that is so passionate about their rugby in the city is something I can’t wait to get stuck into.”
