Bye beats a strong field to win trophy

A staggering score of gross 63, nett 62, was returned by Lansdown Golf Club’s Charlie Patterson last week to win the Mullingar Trophy.

Patterson’s score was four shots ahead of runner-up, 2021 Club Champion, Charlie Taylor-madge, who scored 67 gross, nett 63. Third prize in Division One went to Tom Morris with a gross 71, nett 67. Division Two winners were David Lambern with nett 70 on countback from Giles Carre, with Charlie Godwin third on nett 71. Division Three was headed by Malcolm Payne on net 69, followed by Philip Belsten on nett 73 and Mark Sevier on nett 74.

Lansdown ladies held their Captains’ Day last week and were treated to a day of uninterrup­ted sunshine, luckily before the heatwave arrived. A great time was had by all, and the winner of the Lady Captains’ Shield was Margaret

Ruxton with a stableford score of 36 points. Winner of the Silver Division with 35 was Jane Belsten and, also with 35, was Bev Rees the winner of the Bronze Division prizes.

Saturday’s Davis Cup saw 104 players turn out in an event won by Roland Jenkins with 40 points. Division One winners all had 38 with Ken Watson winning on countback from Ed Butler and Robert Smith. It was the same in Division Two, but this time all three scored 39. Stewart Foster gained victory on countback from Jack

Belsher Terry Bamford.

Two points separated the winners in Division Three, with Fred Hulcoop coming first with 36, one ahead of Andy Rood with and John Dinning third on 34.

■ BATH GOLF CLUB’S ladies played for the Macgregor Medal last week in fine conditions. The winner of Division One was Samantha Robinson with nett 73, just ahead of Sandie Moore on countback. Alison Gardener was third with nett 75.

Division Two was won by Phillippa Bevan with nett 70, just ahead of Leslie Matthews and Marie Robson on nett 74. The winner of Division Three was Polly Andrews on nett 75, just pipping Rachel Brown on countback with Heather Cottle third on nett 77.

Saturday saw the Championsh­ip of Bath staged at the club. In very hot conditions the course welcomed a field of 60 players from across the region with some coming as far away as Lancashire to play in this 36-hole event. Handicaps were all low single figures with some as low as +4. All players found the course challengin­g with very fast greens and the course firming up as temperatur­es reached the 30s in the afternoon.

The winner of the gross prize and Champion of Bath for 2021 was Kieran Bye (Bath GC) with rounds of 66 (near to Bath’s club record) and 76 for a score of 142. Second was Liam O’mara (Bath GC) with 149 and third was Gavin Messer (Cumberwell Park), also on 149. The nett prize was also won by Bye on 138 with Sam Ruddle (The Players Club) second on 141 and Gavin Messer third on 145.

All players enjoyed great food and welcome refreshmen­ts during and after their rounds on such a hot day. Praise went out to the green keeping staff at Bath for presenting the course in such fine condition with many saying the greens were the best they had experience­d all year.
