Silverstone podium for Chadwick

-

Bath racer Jamie Chadwick slipped to second in the W Series standings despite finishing on the podium during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Saturday.

Alice Powell (Racing X) won a dramatic third race of the 2021 W Series season to regain the championship lead. The 28-year-old Briton started from pole, but having lost the lead on the opening lap, she recovered to pass Fabienne Wohlwend (Bunker Racing) in the closing stages and take her second victory of the season after winning the opening round in Austria last month.

With five of this season’s eight rounds remaining – round four is at Hungary’s Hungaroring on July 31 – Powell leads Chadwick by six points.

More than 100,000 fans flocked to Silverstone on another glorious day on Formula 1’s British Grand Prix weekend, and close racing throughout the W Series field kept them on the edges of their seats.

After the race, Chadwick said: “It was a bit of a quiet race for me in third. I didn’t have the pace to challenge the girls at the front who were both super fast. I’m happy to be on the podium, even though I would have loved to have won at home.

“But I’m just speechless looking at this crowd and the support for us, I’ve never seen anything like this. The grid is very competitive this year and it’s really tough to win, but points make prizes. I would have loved the big points today, but we’ll keep chipping away in pursuit of the ultimate prize which is the championship.”
