Back to back wins to begin the season

-

Keynsham Town began their Toolstation Western League Premier Division campaign with back-to-back 3-0 victories this week.

The K’s began at home to Ashton & Backwell United and Jordan Metters opened the scoring just before the half hour mark. That was doubled by Will Hailston four minutes into the second half before Harley Purnell added a third just four minutes later.

The scoreline was repeated on Tuesday at Brislington as Hailston netted a first-half brace. Hailston broke the deadlock on 13 minutes before making 2-0 ten minutes later. Jamie Noble made it 3-0 in first half injury time to make it maximum points for Keynsham.

Bitton are also unbeaten after their opening two games. Starting at home to league new boys Ilfracombe Town, Sean Keet was needed to get Bitton level at halftime after falling behind. A great bit of football saw Groves play the ball to Withey to give Bitton the lead, which then became 3-1 as Carter rifled home from an Elliot cross.

Ilfracombe managed to pull one back to make things interesting, but Bitton held on as Withey was named man of the match. On Tuesday, it was an early battle between two heavyweights as Bitton travelled to newly named Bridgwater United. And the pair couldn’t be separated as they drew 0-0.

In Division One, Odd Down could only take a point from their first two games of the season. They began their campaign at home to early title favourites Welton Rovers and Odd Down fell behind right on half-time to a Jake Slocombe strike. Bryan levelled from the penalty spot six minutes into the second half, but Welton would win the game five minutes from time when Chris Pile earned the points.

Odd Down then travelled to Hengrove Athletic on Tuesday and the hosts took an early lead through Burton after just six minutes.

Bryan made it two goals in as many games to level on the half hour mark, but Hengrove would enter half-time in front as Sheppard netted four minutes before the break. Bryan was on hand to level again for Odd Down on 63 minutes to ensure a point for either side.

■ HELLENIC LEAGUE new boys Corsham Town top the Premier Division following the first games of the campaign on Tuesday. Corsham travelled to Hallen and took the lead early on when Luke Ballinger played a onetwo with Gary Higdon before calmly slotting home.

Brandon Murphy narrowly missed the top corner as Corsham continued to press against their fellow former Western League side but it remained 1-0 at the break. Higdon was back amongst the goals in the second half though as he doubled Corsham’s advantage, heading home from Matt Morris’ corner.

A superb save from Rob Brown ensured it remained 2-0 before Morris delivered another cracking ball for new signing Jaiden Pearce to head Corsham three in front. The rout was complete through Lewis Powell, converting from yet another set piece.

Bradford Town hosted Lydney Town last night.
