Love in the air for Blackmores after victory

Very appropriat­ely, husband and wife teams topped the results in the Loving Cup at Lansdown Golf Club.

Paul and Jo Blackmore took top spot with 34 points which put them three clear of Andy and Cathy Gilmore. Third place, just a further point adrift, went to captain-elect Ed Butler playing with his young daughter Lotti.

The Withers Bowl, a foursomes event for ladies and seniors, was won by Tegwen Hopkins and John Stokes with 40 points but it was a tight affair with John Dare and Bev Rees just one point back.

The winner of the Lansdown Cup, for the best gross score, was won by Ethan Holway (Kendleshir­e) with a round of 77 which put him three clear of Lewis Stalley (Brickhampt­on Court) whilst Lansbehind, down’s Cameron Stevenson took third with a gross 83. Cayden Linton won the best nett prize with a nett 68 whilst Edison Butler took the Kite Cup for the Lansdown best gross score.

Last week, the past captains’ away day took place at Farrington Park. The 2007 captain, Dave Webb, took the honours with 37 points ahead of Ken Rawcliffe. The team event went to Webb playing with club captain Rod Thomas, Alan Veitch and John Bennett. An excellent day was enjoyed by all the past captains.

Club profession­al James Lee held his competitio­n day at the weekend. There were innovative ways to earn points and the winner, with 51, was Andy Pothecary. Just one point back was Thomas – taking second place but only on countback from club champion Charlie Taylor-madge.

Graham Belsten and Paul Garland were a further point adrift and again had to separated on countback, as did John Mountain and Chris Sparkes on 48.

■ BATH GOLF CLUB’S ladies played in a stableford and the overall winner and of Division One was Andrea Phillips with a great score of 43 points, just a point ahead of Kathryn Anthony with Stephanie Moorfoot third on 41. Top of Division Two was Magdalene Ashman-marr on 39, two better than Sandie Moore second on 37 who beat Suzannah Angelospar­ling on countback.

Division Three was won by Jenny Conway on 41, three clear of Ruth Morris with Anne Keeling third on 37.

The seniors played in the RNLI stableford in mixed weather conditions, but despite this the scoring was excellent. The winner of Division One and overall, continuing his fine recent form, was Lek Asavanarun­at with an impressive score of 44 points, beating Ian Mowat by a point after he pipped Richard Morris on countback.

Division Two was headed by Graham Walker with 41, two ahead of Brian Giddings with Michael Roche third on 37.

On Saturday, the men played in a stableford. The early starters had the better of the weather which turned wet and windy during the afternoon. Top of Division One was John Linehan with a fine 40 points, beating James Portman by a point with Andrew Cottle third on 38.

Division Two and the overall competitio­n was won by Graham Duckworth with an outstandin­g 44, three better Alexander Menezes with Andy Akers third on 39. The winner of Division Three was Michael Howard-kyan with 40, one clear of Richard Law who beat Martin Bacon on countback.

Sunday afternoon saw a mixed foursome stableford played for the Becks Cup. Fortunatel­y the morning rain had stopped just before the first competitor­s teed off and conditions remained fine all afternoon for the 25 teams taking part.

Anne Keeling, ladies captain, presented the prizes to the winners who, with a score of 39 points, were Miles and Louise Williamson.

Second on 38 were Anthony and Honor Jones, beating Geoff and Kathy Ogden on countback. Drinks were enjoyed in evening sunshine on the terrace followed by a great buffet dinner in the clubhouse.
