Staffies are named top dog in our vote to find best breed
Staffordshire Bull Terriers have been crowned the UK’S favourite dog breed.
Our brand new sister site, Teamdogs, and Pooch & Mutt food for dogs company, launched a campaign to find out which dog breed really is the nation’s favourite.
Over the past three weeks thousands cast their vote for their favourite breed. In the end, Staffies were victorious.
There was suspense, there was disappointment, there were bombshell breeds added at the midpoint, but in the end it was Staffies with their big grins and bigger hearts that won over the nation.
They took the top spot, beating black Labradors in second place.
The competition started three weeks ago with 47 breeds. Each week, the bottom 10 breeds were put in “the dog house” and eliminated from the competition.
Teamdogs gave people the opportunity to tell us about their favourite breed if it was not included on the leaderboard and subsequently Samoyed, Great Dane, Bedlington Terrier and Akita were added to the list.
However, none of this affected Staffies, which led from the front from early on.
The full top 10 was as follows:
■ Staffordshire Bull Terrier
■ Black Labrador
■ Boxer
■ Greyhound
■ Border Collie
■ German Shepherd
■ Cockapoo
■ Border Terrier
■ Cocker Spaniel
■ Jack Russell
Suzanne Sargent, championing the breed, wrote about her dog Lola: “A game in the garden, long walk or simply a ‘cuddle up’ on the sofa, she’ll be happy to oblige – as long as she’s with you. This love of human company has been clearly apparent in each of the three Staffies we’ve been lucky enough to own and others we have encountered.
“Sadly, this love and loyalty that runs through their DNA has been exploited by unscrupulous owners, giving them a bad reputation – in the majority of cases, a reputation they really don’t deserve. Rescue centres generally have more Staffordshires that need rehoming than any other breed. Knowing how much these doggies crave human contact and interaction, you realise how unhappy they would be, however well cared for.
“Rescue a Staffie and that little dog will rescue you too – even if you didn’t know you needed rescuing!”
