Golfers defy rain to post good scores

-

Apart from the disappointing weather, Lansdown’s Captain’s Charity Day proved a successful and enjoyable event.

The format was teams of four playing a bowmaker, 2 scores to count, and the winning team came in with an impressive score of 92 points.

The runners-up were only one point behind, so the wind and rain did not deter the competitors from playing some very good golf.

The winning team was captained by Tom Cooper, and included Edison Butler, Dave Baker and Tom Brooks.

The second team with 91 points was Paul Maidment, Dave Pike, Alan Denning and John Jotcham.

Third with a very respectable 88 points were John Crump, Dave Pollinger, Joe Garry and John Pullin. Club captain Rod Thomas was extremely pleased to announce that the day had raised nearly £2,000 for his designated charity, Dorothy House Hospice Care. The event was also supported by Lansdown Mazda who put one of their prestige models on display.

The Seniors’ Open Day was well supported not only by players from local clubs but also players from as far afield as Winchester and Pontypool.

The honours went to Steve Brunton with a nett 67 which put him one shot clear of Colin Holcombe and Steve Ganaway (from Chipping Sodbury) who could only be separated on countback. Geoff Andrews took fourth spot with a nett 9 but again on countback from John Stokes.

The second round of the Frieda Bowl was won by Margaret Ruxton with a net 75 – two shots clear of Kate Mccarey and Bev Rees.

Bath ladies start this week’s roundup of competition results from Bath Golf Club having played a medal last week.

In fine warm conditions the winner of division 1 was Rebecca Wood with nett 70, second on nett 73 was Sandra Nott with Honor Jones third on nett 75.

Top of division 2 was Ann Cook with nett 72 with Ann Tonge second on nett 73 just ahead of Fay Galley with the same score. Division 3 was won by Jeannie Willis with nett 75, second on nett 76 was Janet Scilly with Penny Ross third also on nett 76. The overall winner was Rebecca Wood.

Due to lockdown restrictions over the winter months the Seniors winter knockouts were only recently completed.

The winners of the foursomes and the George Oliver Trophy were Chris Loveluck and Paul Selley who defeated Steve Bailey and Michael Howard-kyan in a tense final.

The winner of the singles and the Wilfred Smith as it is known was Gary Mcardle who beat Ian Colville in the final.

Bath men competed in a bowmaker stableford last Saturday with two scores out of four to count. Decent weather conditions and receptive greens meant scoring was very good.

The senior team of Dave Rushgrove, Joihn Johnston, Russell Wakefield and Pete Glanville showed the way with a great score of 90 points, followed by Richard Blofeld, Keith Thomas, John Heaney and Alfie Bassett on 89 points. Third were Matthew Warman, William Warman, Chris Parkin and Andrew Cottle with 88 points.

On Bank Holiday Monday (August 30) Bath Golf Club is hosting an open stableford competition and there are a few places left.

Entry includes a quality meal provided by the fine catering team at the club and a range of refreshments are also available.

All players will be able to enjoy the clubhouse and terraced areas during the day. For further details and to enter contact the club office on 01225 463834.
