Jail for attacker who was asked about face mask

A man was attacked and robbed in a Bath launderett­e after asking someone why they weren’t wearing a face mask.

Bristol Crown Court heard 61-year-old Andrew Beaven was using Dolly Tub launderett­e when Tyler Corpe, inset, subjected him to the “degrading” attack. The incident was captured on the business’ CCTV system.

Corpe, 34, of Manvers Street in Bath, pleaded guilty to robbery on January 22. He also pleaded guilty to a later public order offence.

Judge Julian Lambert jailed him for four years. He told Corpe: “You set about a vulnerable 61-year-old man, beating and detaining him against his will. There was an element of degradatio­n.”

Giles Nelson, prosecutin­g, said when Corpe entered the launderett­e Mr Bevan asked him why he wasn’t wearing a face mask.

Corpe appeared to be spoiling for a fight, the court heard.

Mr Beaven stated: “He told me ‘we couldn’t care less about you.’ He thinks older people should die.’”

Mr Nelson described how Corpe then punched Mr Beaven several times, put him in a headlock and threw him to the floor before kicking him and stealing his wallet.

The court heard Mr Beaven’s bank card was used later.

On March 1, Corpe was seen holding a large pair of scissors in an incident at a Sainsbury’s Local in Bath - in which he came off worse.

He was interviewe­d by police on April 22 and made no comment, the court was told.
