Hundreds take to road for charity

-

More than 700 riders pedalled their way around the Somerset and Wiltshire countryside for the tenth annual staging of the Bike Bath cycling event.

The weather was the perfect addition to this year’s event which saw new start and finish locations in Frome and Devizes, as well as the Bath Recreation Ground.

Riders taking part completed distances of 25, 50 or 70 miles while raising funds for a host of good causes, including the event’s official supported charity, Dorothy House Hospice.

This year, the longer distances took in the White Horse of Westbury climb and Bowden Hill, providing some stunning views as a reward for the climbing efforts.

All routes meandered through pretty lanes and picturesque villages with some riders stating they never knew the roads existed despite being local.

The event received support from many local businesses including HPH, which sponsored the medium 50-mile route as part of its continuing support of the event, and the Bath Recreation Trust, which partnered with the event in addition to providing the use of one of their managed sites – the Bath Recreation Ground.

Local cycling club VC Walcot is also an event partner with a number of its members helping out.

Linda Hitchcox, who rode the 50-mile route from Devizes, said: “What a fantastic route, so clearly signposted and great feed stations.

“When I did have a problem, the emergency contact sorted me no problem. Thank you so much, I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Another rider, Danny Davis, who started in Bath, added: “Thank you for a fantastic event!

“Great route, great after party and a really friendly day.”

Talking about the day, event organiser Jacko Jackson said: “It’s been a good day – given Covid caution - we’ve seen a fantastic turnout of cyclists, most of whom appear to have had a really enjoyable time.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support for the event – from local businesses, the riders and our volunteers – all of whom make the event possible. The atmosphere and positive vibes at the event have been great. Of course the sunshine certainly helps, but I’m delighted to see the positive support continuing for the event.”
