A patient survey has ranked the GP surgeries in Bath, based on a range of factors, and one came out on top.

Batheaston Medical Centre (BMC) achieved a 99 per cent rating from patients, making it the best surgery in the city according to the GP Patient Survey.

A total of 12 practices were included in the survey and assessed on factors such as how helpful the receptionists were and whether patients were offered a range of appointment times.

Heart of Bath brought up the rear with its 85 per cent rating, while Combe Down Surgery, University Medical Centre, Rush Hill Surgery and Fairfield Park Health Centre made it into the top five.

Patients at Batheaston Medical Centre and Grosvenor Place gave their practices 97 per cent for ease of getting through by phone.

While more than two-thirds of respondents said it was “very easy” to ring up BMC, 71 per cent of patients said this of Grosvenor Place - making it the easiest surgery to call in Bath.

The majority of other surgeries scored above 80 per cent in this category, but Heart of Bath was rated just 65 per cent and Rush Hill received a 77 per cent rating.

Almost a fifth of people at Heart of Bath said it was “not very easy” to call their GP surgery.

All of the 12 practices achieved good scores in the “helpfulness of receptionists” category, with the highest - BMC - receiving a 100 per cent rating.

It was closely followed by University Medical Centre on 98 per cent and the Combe Down and Newbridge surgeries on 97 per cent.

The Pulteney Practice received the lowest score in this category, with just 85 per cent.

Ease of making an appointment was assessed through several different questions and looked at the percentage of patients who described their experience of booking an appointment as “good”.

While BMC, Grosvenor Place, and Newbridge Surgery scored in the 90s, some of the city’s practices fell below 80 per cent.

St Michael’s Surgery got 79 per cent, Widcombe got 76, Pulteney got 75, and Heart of Bath got 73 per cent.

Around 99 per cent of the patients at BMC said their GP was a good listener at their last appointment.

But some surgeries did not score so highly.

Grosvenor Place scored just 87 per cent and University Medical Centre received an 82 per cent rating.

Heart of Bath, despite receiving a low score overall, excelled in the “confidence and trust” its doctors gave patients and 97 per cent of people felt their needs were met during their last general practice appointment.
