TEAM Bath athletes switched colours to make a big contribution to the finale of the National Athletics League Premiership South West.

A sizeable contingent of local athletes turned out for Bristol & West AC under the higher qualification rule and made a significant contribution to their victory in the fourth and final fixture at Yate.

Arguably the top performance of the day came from the club’s Bath University student Emily Tyrrell, who broke six metres for the first time with a winning leap of 6.03m, adding two centimetres to her previous best set in June.

The junior also won the B 100m hurdles (14.60secs) and was third in the high jump clearing 1.60m, just outside her PB of 1.65.

Team Bath clubmate Jake Burkey was also in impressive form producing 7.33m, his equal third best distance of his career, to win the long jump then clearing an outdoor PB of 1.90m to finish third in the high jump.

To underline his all-round skills Burkey was also third in the javelin with 44.59m and clocked a personal best of 11.23secs, into a headwind, in the non-scoring 100m race.

British junior international Jenna Blundell produced more stellar performances winning the 100m hurdles in 13.81secs and was second in the 100m with 12.33secs.

Finally Blundell anchored the women’s sprint relay team of Tamara Jackson, Ella Bowell, Amy Gandhi to a convincing victory over the Cardiff team.

Joe Carter has been enjoying a strong season and he secured a sprint double in the 100m (11.03secs into a headwind) and 200m (22.28secs) B races and then took part in a strong relay performance.

“A big thank you to all our officials & coaches who have supported the team by their presence throughout the season, and without whom these matches would not be possible,” said team manager Chris Elson.

COMPETING in the Cardiff 5k road race on Sunday, in what was only his second appearance of the year, Team Bath’s Freddie Webb finished 26th in a

fine time of 15mins 08secs.

That smashed his previous best by over a minute though his only previous attempt at the distance was way back in 2015 when Webb was still competing as an under 17 athlete.

IN the penultimate South West PB 5k road race of the summer around the Odd Down cycle circuit, Aidan Daniel finished top Team Bath runner in a time of 15mins 52secs, just one second off his lifetime best set on the same course in June.

BOX-BASED ultra running star

Damian Hall was forced to pull out of the Ultra Tour du Mont-blanc over the weekend.

“The short version is that a handful of mishaps conspired to slow me and I just didn’t fancy another 50 miles for the sake of it,” said Hall.

Previously the former Running Bath/chron athlete of the year winner had finished fifth in an event he has described as one of his all-time favourites.
