‘Brainless’ fly-tippers dump mattresses in middle of road

-

Three mattresses “with bedsheets on” were found dumped on a busy road in Bath on Monday morning.

Sean Dudden lives in Shaws Way in Twerton and spotted the flytipped mess at around 7.30am when he came downstairs for breakfast.

The 51-year-old said: “I came down to have a cup of tea in the garden and my wife opened the curtains and said, ‘There are three mattresses in the middle of the road at the junction.’

“I said I didn’t believe her but then I saw them for myself and I went out in my dressing gown and Ugg boots to take a picture.

“I just can’t understand it – why dump them in a housing estate where anyone might see you?

“They were lucky they were out of sight of our CCTV. It’s just the worst thing I’ve seen in a while.”

Mr Dudden added that he was very worried someone would drive into the pile of bedding or that a

partially sighted person might fall over them while crossing the road.

“It’s just a completely brainless thing to do. We do get ambulances and blind people on our road.

“If an emergency vehicle came flying around the corner they could

have hit the mattresses and gone into somebody’s house.

“I rang 101 and reported it to one of their team and she spoke to the council. I also emailed our councillor, Tim Ball,” Mr Dudden said.

Although he wondered if the beds had fallen off a delivery lorry, Mr Dudden said they would still have been “in their wrappers” in that case.

He considered moving them himself but, as they had dirty sheets on them, he decided against it.

“The bedclothes weren’t clean and with Covid still going on you have to be careful. I think they maybe came from a rental home.

“You do find a lot of wardrobes and chests of drawers around here, dumped in the lanes, and it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out that it’s all from someone’s house,” Mr Dudden said.

Around 8am the same morning a van arrived to collect the mattresses and they were taken away.

People living in Bath and North East Somerset can order the collection of large waste items on the council website. You can see examples of what can be collected and a list of prices at https://beta.bathnes. gov.uk/order-large-waste-itemcollection
