Bath side clinches promotion with title win
The SWF league season for Bath Croquet Club is coming to its conclusion with final divisional matches being played.
The club’s Advanced Association Croquet team won the Division Two title and will be competing in Division One next season. In the AC Intermediate league North Division, the club won their final match 5-2 away at Bristol.
This resulted in a tie at top of the division on matches won with both Kington Langley and Worcester Norton, but the team lost out on a place in the play-offs to the former on game difference.
The club’s Short Lawns team are currently top of the South division with three wins out of four but await the result of Taunton Deane’s final match this week to decide their final position.
In the Golf Croquet leagues, the level play team finished their season off with a 12-8 success at home to Camerton & Peasedown.
This resulted in the team finishing second in the East Division with their only defeat coming against Winterborne Valley whose team included two England international players.
The club held their internal One Ball tournament at the Rec. One Ball is a simplified variant of AC with both AC and GC players taking part.
The event was won by Ally Hoyland on her debut at this form of croquet with six wins from seven games. In second was experienced player Roger Hayes who just pipped another debutant, Sue Duncan, on result against each other when they both finished with five wins.
More information on croquet and BCC are on the club’s website at www.bathcroquetclub.com.
The club were also pleased to host part of the Cleveland Pools Trust mini Georgian Olympics fundraiser at the Rec. The eight participants, wearing period costume, had some basic tuition in the art of croquet and then took part in a series of doubles matches. Following a prize giving to the winning pair, Luke and Oleg, they departed to take part in their next sport of Boules.
