Cars to look forward to in 2022

- ■ Edited by Colin Goodwin

Dacia Jogger

The Jogger is a typical Dacia product in that it gives buyers a way into a type of vehicle at a ridiculously low price.

In the case of the Jogger that vehicle is a seven-seat people carrier that looks a bit like a cross between an estate car and an SUV. Prices will start at £14,995 for the Essential entry-level trim. The most you can pay for a Jogger is £17,395 for the Extreme SE. For those looking for space, simplicity and practicality but don’t want to pay the earth for it, the Jogger will be perfect.

Renault Megane E-tech

Having launched the pioneering and extremely good Zoe in 2013, Renault has fallen behind with electric cars.

But that’s about to change with the introduction of many new EVS over the next few years including a production version of the cool Renault 5 concept.

But for the present we have the launch of the Megane E-tech in the first few months of 2022.

The coupe/suv-styled vehicle will use a 60kwh battery and have a range of up to 280 miles.

Prices are likely to start at just over £30,000.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

Alfa Romeo’s crossover, which will join the larger Stelvio in Alfa’s SUV offering, is a regular in our annual ‘what to look forward to’ guide. The trouble is, it doesn’t actually arrive.

Surely 2022 has to be when the Tonale finally hits the showrooms? Word is that Alfa Romeo is planning a new model offensive in 2022 and the Tonale, which is aimed at BMW X1 and Audi Q3 buyers and will cost from around £30k, will be joined by a small compact crossover.

BMW M3 Touring

2022 is the year that a Touring version of the

M3 will go on sale.

BMW has made estate versions of its M5 before but never of the smaller car. High performance Touring versions of the 3-Series had been left to Alpina. The M3 Touring will wear the same controversial nose as the M3 and M4 and will share their 3.0-litre, twin-turbo, 503bhp six-cylinder engine. Four-wheel drive will be available, possibly as standard. Expect a price tag of around £75,000.

Lotus Emira

This is the car that I’m most looking forward to getting behind the wheel of.

The Emira will be the first of a new generation of sports cars that will be made by the Norfolk-based carmaker.

Light (by modern standards), Lotus says its body is designed to maximise downforce. Stunning looking and almost certainly brilliant to drive, the Emira will be powered either by a four-cylinder engine from Mercedes or a heavily modified V6 built by Toyota. Expect prices from £60,000.

Citroen Ami

Citroen is bringing its cute Ami electric city car to the UK thanks to popular demand. It’ll be left-hand drive only. A cargo version is coming too which deletes the passenger seat and replaces it with a small luggage area that will be perfect for small businesses such as florists. Citroen hasn’t published a price yet but £6,000 is a well educated guess.

Ineos Grenadier

The Grenadier is a rugged, straightforward and appealing, traditional off-roader. Most compare it to the old Land Rover Defender but for me it reminds more of the original Mercedes-benz G-wagen. I’ve seen the car in the metal and it’s impressive, particularly the interior which is blissfully simple and refreshing. Prices are billed to start at around £48,000.
