VIPS dig in as pupils launch tree campaign
A tree planting organisation and a community nursery in Bath have teamed up with schools to grow 7,000 trees in 2022 and double that number in 2023.
More Trees BANES is working with Grow Yourself, a local community interest company that provides work experience and training for unemployed young people, with the aim of getting them back into work.
The partnership is creating new tree nurseries in schools and communities across B&NES.
Oldfield Park Junior School was quick off the mark, signing up to be the first new tree nursery set up by the organisation.
On Friday the High Sheriff of Somerset, Thomas Sheppard, and the Mayor of Bath, June Player, officially opened the new nursery.
“We are delighted that the High Sheriff of Somerset and Mayor of Bath are coming to open the nursery,” said Dave Goucher, Oldfield Park head teacher.
“The children, including our young Eco Team will learn about the many benefits of trees, including how important they are for tackling our climate and ecological emergencies.”
Youngsters planted small trees in the nursery for growing on and planted out a larger tree in the Forest School area.
“We are so happy to have Oldfield Park Junior School on board!” said Adam Gretton, chair and founder of More Trees BANES.
“We are excited about this new endeavour and with the help of many other schools and communities we can make an important contribution towards the ambitious targets for tree planting across the area.
“All our trees have local provenance and most will be grown from seed collected from ancient woodlands.”
