Tight top tussle continuing

There were just the three games in Division One of the Bath & District Table Tennis League this week as Radstock B and Chippenham B looked to pull away at the top of the league.

Radstock B hosted bottom club Oldfield C and ran out 26-10 winners. Oldfield have recently signed on the returning Ollie Newton with the youngster winning six points from a possible nine. Keren Millard was POTM for Radstock with a hard fought maximum.

Chippenham B were also at home, gaining a 24-10 win against Bear Flat B. Andrew Perham was POTM with maximum points alongside Brenda Baldwin.

Bear Flat had to call upon Miles Hartwell from their D team and the experience will have served him well for the rest of the season.

These results lock Radstock and

Chippenham in first and second spot respective­ly on 251 and 250 points. Key Centre A are on 209 points in third having played ten games, to Radstock’s 11 games while crucially Chippenham are also on ten games.

At the other end of the table, there was a tight encounter between Bear Flat C and Key Centre B. After five sets the home side were leading 12-8 with wins from Yui Sum Lo and Tim Cahill.

However straight set wins from Key Centre’s Gill Beer and David Carter gave the away side a 14-12 lead going into the eighth set. Grahame Harbour edged out John Hunter 3-2 to give the Key Centre a 17-14 lead going into the final two games.

Cahill won his final singles game 3-1 cutting the away team’s lead to a point. The experience of Carter and Harbour saw out the doubles game 3-1 giving the Keynsham side a 21-18 away win; keeping them within touching distance of getting out of the relegation places.
