Humphries on trial in the Football League

-

Larkhall Athletic player Owen Humphries is eyeing the Football League after spending time on trial at several clubs.

Having recently moved from Mangotsfield United, midfielder Humphries has been at Sheffield Wednesday and played in their Under-23s defeat against Peterborough United and before that the 19-year-old was on trial with Birmingham City with whom he scored for against Stoke City in a 1-1 draw.

The Larks were without a game at the weekend but have lost captain Mike Baker to promotion chasing Frome Town and will now be replaced by Matt Britton, with Josh Jones named a vice-captain.

■ WESTERN LEAGUE Exmouth Town maintained Devon’s stranglehold over the top two positions in the Premier Division after beating ten man Keynsham Town 2-1.

Bitton were unable to break the deadlock in a goalless draw at Millbrook. Joseph Mclennan teased an early cross from the left but it was dealt with by the Millbrook defence who had started the better.

Bitton grew into the game and another Mclennan cross was this time glanced wide by Dean Griffiths. Matthew Groves tested the Millbrook goalkeeper time with an effort which was spilled without leading to anything.

Ben Withey had Bitton’s first effort of the second half from longrange and didn’t trouble the keeper. Jordan Whittaker fired over after good work from Jack Allward and Groves before goalkeeper Matt Dunk was called into action at the other end, tipping over a pointblank header before producing another great save from the following corner.

■ HELLENIC LEAGUE Bradford Town are edging closer to leaders Bishops Cleeve following their 3-1 win at Longlevens to sit seven points behind with a game in hand. Despite starting well with Harry Rutty just heading wide, Longlevens took the lead through Ethan Dunbar.

Undeterred, Bradford levelled six minutes before half-time when George Box produced an audacious rabona through-ball for Jake Brown to score. It took just five second half minutes for Bradford to take the lead as Box was on hand to head home from Charlie Walton’s cross.

The game seemed to turn when Longlevens were sent down to nine men, Bradley Martin and Rudi Mckinnon the guilty parties. The win was secured in injury time though through Harvey Baker.

Bradford were due to travel to Westbury United on Tuesday, but that has been rearranged for Good Friday.

Defeat for Longlevens allowed Corsham Town to move up to third on goal difference after a single goal was enough to see off visitors Chipping Sodbury Town. The all important goal came two minutes before half-time from Ryan Bath.

■ WILTSHIRE LEAGUE Corsham Town Development avenged their earlier defeat in some style against Calne Town Reserves. In a tight first half, Corsham led 1-0 at the break, but stepped it up in the second half to score four more unanswered goals.

Mccarron bagged a brace for the second week running, while Chay Forrester scored from the penalty spot alongside an own goal and a strike from Ed Mccormack completing the scoring in the 5-0 win. Corsham move above Calne into third in the table.

On Friday night, Odd Down Reserves travelled to Melksham Town Reserves with 145 watching under the lights. Melksham started well and were in front within the first five minutes, Cameron Pearce getting behind the defence and slotting past Matt Banahan.

Down responded well and took the game to Melksham. After a sustained period of pressure they got themselves back on level terms through Tom Ellis-ricketts with his fifth of the season. Melksham went back in front with a second goal before the break, Pearce finishing with a neat chip.

Both sides continued to create chances in the second half but it was Melksham who extended their lead, Elliott Corp firing in off the post. Down pushed hard to get back in the game, they twice hit the post and had a goal disallowed before reducing the deficit right at the death when Charlie Saunders scored from the penalty spot.
