Norland nannies star in new ‘crinkly’ book for children
Bath’s world-renowned Norland nannies are the subject of a children’s newspaper showcasing their work in the most delightful way.
“The cloth book is in the shape of a newspaper,” said Dee Burn, marketeer for Norland College in Oldfield Park, which is marking its 130th year. “It’s all crinkly with colours and pictures and very tactile, so it’s just perfect for babies’ literacy and sensory development.”
The Norland Nursery Times Crinkly Newspaper is suitable for babies aged three months and above as well as toddlers.
The six-page, illustrated book tells the story of a child’s day out in Bath with a Norland Nanny.
“We’re privileged to have the opportunity to design a Norland nanny crinkly cloth book,” said Jo Joof and Nic Moore, founders of Crinkly Cloth Books in Frome.
“Bath is a beautiful city and it was on our to-do list so being able to focus the content on a Norland nanny worked perfectly.”
Norland, founded in 1892, is world-famous for providing the finest quality early years training and education and for supplying nannies to the rich and famous.
Nannies trained by Norland College can now study for a threeyear full BA (Hons) degree in early years development and learning.
At Norland, a uniform is still a strong part of the tradition. At the same time, the nannies study for their Norland diploma, a fully practical course which teaches traditional skills like sewing, and every Norland nanny graduates with a full gamut of cookery skills: they are proficient at everything from eggs, sauces and celebratory dinners to birthday feasts and diets with allergies.
On the subject of whether the world’s most famous nanny, Mary Poppins, graduated from Norland, Dee said: “The uniform that Mary Poppins wears does echo the uniform that our nannies wore in the Edwardian period.
“Children are at the heart of everything she does and that’s exactly what Norland’s about.”
