Bright minds journey into future in contest
Two Bath University students took part in a competition to design the smart and sustainable transport system of the future.
Sarah Kelly and Daniel Wilcox, who are both studying engineering, were challenged by tech giant Siemens to design an intelligent, sustainable and interconnected network for a fictional city region, using a variety of transport types for citizens living in different environments.
“Sustainacity was an opportunity to take on a new challenge and push myself out of my comfort zone,” said Sarah, 23. “I had an amazing time.”
“Winning the competition helped me build confidence in my abilities and has driven me to strive for further professional development and say yes to new opportunities - not to mention it’s a great thing to have on my CV,” she said.
“The Sustainacity experience was excellent,” said Dan, 21. “I particularly enjoyed the teamwork and the opportunity to be creative. The competition has been a fantastic addition to my CV.”
After the two-day, hackathonstyle event 22 students and graduates were offered access to early career opportunities with Siemens.
Winning group Eco Made Easy proposed using a hyperloop tunnel (a sealed tube, high-speed transport system) and hydrofoil water vessel, an app using real-time transport data and AI to map the fastest, cheapest and most sustainable journeys, and an innovative pod-style, rail-bus system.
“The wildcard proposition of a train/pod solution captivated all of the judges,” said head judge Thomas Edwards, of Siemens.
“We were extremely impressed with all 50 of the participants and their outstanding ideas.”
