Grateful driver in a welcome return
Former Kingswood School pupil Bailey Voisin and Josh Caygill have been selected to join United Autosports’ European Le Mans Series LMP3 team for the 2022 season.
Voisin, now based at the University of Bath, returns to the team after a hugely successful debut with United Autosports last year racing in the GT4 European Series. Voisin, along with Charlie Fagg, scored three wins and five podiums throughout the year, winning both the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championship at the end of the six-round series.
Voisin will be joined by newcomer to the team, Caygill who most recently raced in the 2021 Porsche Carrera Cup GB but has also raced in the British Touring Car Championship, as well as making several appearances in GT endurance racing.
Both have been testing the Ligier JS P320 with United Autosports ahead of their debut in the European Le Mans Series, which begins in April at Paul Ricard, France. Voisin tested the Ligier JS P320 at Portimao at the end of last year as a reward for winning the GT4 European Series.
The team are still considering their options for the third driver that will complete the line up in the #2 Ligier JS P320.
Voisin said: “I am extremely excited to be rejoining the United Autosports family for another year and can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the LMP3 car. A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible.”
Racing clearly runs in the family as younger brother Callum will be driving in GB3 Championship, formerly known as British F3, for Carlin - the same team that Somerset Formula One star Lando Norris raced with when winning his British F3 and F2 titles.
The 15-year old, who spent 2021 racing in the Ginetta Junior championship with great success, will make the switch to single seaters with the current champions, and was the first driver in Carlin’s 2022 line-up to be announced.
Callum’s credentials are already impressive, despite his young age.
His debut season in the Ginetta Junior Championship saw him finish sixth overall, securing seven victories, 11 podiums and two pole positions along the way. He was the joint-highest race winner throughout the season with a particularly dominant display at Brands Hatch, where he took a clean sweep of all three race victories on offer; the only driver to achieve the accolade throughout the year.
Prior to his Ginetta campaign, Callum, who is studying for his GCSES at Kingswood, enjoyed a busy karting career in multiple series including finishing third in the British championship last year, with fourth the previous season, becoming the English Champion and representing Team UK at the world finals.
Callum has already participated in a test day with the Carlin team and taken part in simulator sessions ahead of a full winter test programme.
Callum said: “I am extremely excited to be joining Carlin for the 2022 GB3 Championship. They have impressed me this year with their dominance, and I was blown away by their professionalism when I tested with them. I just want to say thank you to Edge Sporting Management for putting this deal together with Carlin; I cannot wait to get started.”
