Inquest into death of young rugby player set for autumn

-

The date for an inquest into the death of a 15-year-old Bath schoolboy who died on a Spanish exchange trip two years ago has been provisionally set.

Max Mcmullen, 15, who attended Beechen Cliff School in Bath, died after falling from a seventh-floor window in the city of Cordoba on October 19, 2019.

Last week at Avon Coroners Court in Flax Bourton, coroner Maria Voisin led a pre-inquest review into Mr Mcmullen’s death.

There a provisional date for an inquest was set for the week commencing October 24.

Friends and locals paid tribute to the teenager on social media after he died, saying he will “never be forgotten”.

Two years ago, Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership, which oversees both Beechen Cliff and Hayesfield Girls School – who were also on the trip – said the death was a “tragic incident”.

Beechen Cliff had counsellors at the school following the tragedy and said they would “be available for as long as they are required”.

The letter to parents from the school said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends within both of our school communities.

“We appreciate that this will be a distressing time for everyone within our schools and we are working hard to ensure that support will be made available to all students through counselling and support rooms.”

Bath Rugby also paid tribute to the schoolboy, who was a member of their academy team, saying he was a “truly promising young player”.

“We feel lucky as a club to have been able to support Max on his rugby journey in recent seasons, and this news is something that everyone in the academy feels deep sadness about,” the club said.

“As a club we will do all we can to support Max’s family and teammates both now and in the future.”
