Plenty of cup thrills as league takes a break

- Mark Payne-blackmore sport@bathchron.co.uk

No BDFL league action this weekend but there was plenty of cup football, not only district but two big Somerset semi-finals which involved two Bath sides hoping to make the final also.

Odd Down Reserves 4 Trinity 5: this one was goals galore and the Division One side just scraped through

Down put up a spirited effort with goals from Farr (2) Clark (1) and Whittock (1) but Smith-core got a brace of his own for the away team while Squire, Lakeman and Mason also all got on the scoresheet to claim the three points in this group stage of the cup.

Lansdown first team hosted Batheaston and though the visitors had a makeshift keeper in Luke Cook he certainly looked the part.

He did concede two via Taylor and Rogers but it ultimately wasn’t enough as Batheaston answered back with four of their own to complete a 2-4 victory.

Griffin 0 Two Weir Town 1: the Third Division side edged this one leaving their second tier opposition disappointed and making this group very interesting, with Kingsmead yet to play and Nathan firsts only having the one away-walkover.

Meanwhile Olympic Victoria and Bath United put on a real show for the neutrals in a six goal thriller.

They couldn’t be separated. The game finished level at 3-3 and both teams were left scratching their heads as to how a winner didn’t come - but what a match as they take a point each.

Lansdown Reserves 2 Keynsham Reserves 4: in the last game played in the district cup group this weekend, Rangers grabbed a vital three points.

Pete Hutchinson and Jake Taylor scored for the hosts but it was made mere consolation as Nathan Jessop scored twice, with teammates Ionut Ranete and Muresan adding goals for an impressive and important result.

Although that was the last district cup game played it was not the last that threw up a result.

Team Nathan Reserves had to forfeit a second game out of three versus Farrington, leaving their hosts to claim a home win.

Another side to be gifted the homewin without hearing a whistle or putting on a kit was PF Loco with Heritage Reserves unable to fulfil the fixture.

Ramblers 2 Kingsmead 2: in the first semi-final of the Somerset Sunday Challenge cup the away Bath side took it all the way to penalties, unluckily losing 7-6.

It was all down to Puckle Vale playing a free-scoring West Bower to try to book a Bath side a place in the final. But it wasn’t to be with the final score: Puckle Vale 0 West Bower 5.

Still take nothing away from these two Bath teams, excellent achievement reaching the semis.
