Defying rain to mark Queen’s 70 year reign
Civic leaders attended a tree planting in Queen Square, Bath, to mark the 70th day of the 70th year since the Queen’s accession to the throne.
Her Majesty’s Lord-lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, the Mayor of Bath, June Player, and the High Sheriff of Somerset, Thomas Sheppard, joined a crowd braving the rain for the special City of Bath planting of a London plane on Friday (March 11).
Civic leaders across the UK were also planting commemorative on the special day as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign.
“I was delighted to welcome everyone, especially my honoured guests,” said the Mayor. “There have been many tree plantings in the city, and to have a new tree in Queen Square is most appropriate to mark this occasion for generations to come.
“I thank Bath & North East Somerset Council’s parks department for all their support and for identifying this location for the new plane tree. It was a very wet morning, but I was so pleased that a wonderfully enthusiastic crowd gathered to join in.”
This was an even more significant event for the Mayor, because it was in keeping with her Mayoral theme ‘Keeping it Clean, Green & Friendly Promoting Pride in Our Community’.
“The City of Bath has now planted a London plane tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy which will remind future generations of our Queen’s 70 years on the throne,” said the Lord-lieutenant.
“Where better for this tree to be than in Queen Square. Thank you all for giving me the honour of planting it as Her Majesty’s representative in Somerset.”
Keith Rowe, B&NES parks and greenspaces team manager, said: “The London plane tree planted today makes a great addition to the prominent Queen Square, complementing the Square’s Georgian heritage while planting to improve air quality.”
