RAISE A GLASS

- WITH JANE CLARE

We’re nudging towards a special day of the year: Mother’s Day on March 27 when it’s time for mum to enjoy treats such as flowers, chocolates, hugs, cards, breakfast in bed and a special Sunday dinner.

I’ll add wine to that list, and here are some thoughts for pocketsized budgets if mum likes pinks.

Casa Maña Tempranillo Garnacha Rosé (Tesco £4.50). It’s a rosé created from a blend of tempranillo and garnacha grapes which grow in La Mancha in Spain. The wine isn’t shy of releasing its aromas of strawberries and raspberries, which are flavour friends in a sip or two.

I enjoyed this next wine from the Co-op, Pour Le Vin ‘Bonne Mine’ Rosé (£6.50).

It is such a pretty little thing, with grenache grapes. Mmm, the last wine also used garnacha… and this is grenache. These wine cousins are from different countries but it’s the same grape.

Bonne Mine hails from the Languedoc in France and is soft, floral, with raspberries and a flirt with citrus.

Perhaps you want to treat mum like a princess; and our favourite non-royal princess is Kylie.

With Kylie Prosecco Rosé (£11.99, online at The Bottle Club) mum will enjoy a dry prosecco that is playfully fizzy, but with an extra-special touch of elegance from its notes of red fruits and citrus.

Just like Kylie, it is beautiful too, with the sparkles poured from an eye-catching cut-glass bottle.

One of my favourite organic proseccos to pick up on the Big Shop is Aldi’s Organic Prosecco Rosé (£8.49). It has flavours and aromas of strawberries, not from a muchtravelled supermarket punnet, but from a hedgerow – fruits that are still harnessing mother nature, fresh and vibrant. The wine is organic, not just in the vineyard but in the winery too.

If you do want to push the boat out, you could find one of the most famous champagne brands: Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial NV (RRP £44, widely available). It’s a gift that will make mum feel much-loved, though how you’ll persuade her to let you have a sip or two is down to you.

It is a delicious, rounded, fruitgiving champagne which is silky and complex on the palate.

If, like me, you don’t have mum with you any more, then raise a glass on Mother’s Day as you reflect on precious memories.
