Sun returns for competition

-

As dry weather over Easter continued, so did the events and competitions at Bath Golf Club.

The ladies competed in the Allin Trophies and the Coronation 4s, a Stableford pairs competition held in fine conditions. The winners, with a score of 41 points were Carol Williams & Jeannie Willis. They finished two in front of Jill Carter & Marion Mcburnie who in turn were one better than Jane Franke & Jan Tope.

After colder weather and strong winds on previous days, Sunday saw the East wind drop slightly and the sun returned for the St George’s Mixed Greensomes Stableford. This was the second mixed club competition of the season and 20 pairs took part. Jill & Niall Carter were the winners on 44 points, beating Mark & Stephanie Moorfoot on countback. Linda & Neil Mchugh were third on 42.

The prizes were presented by ladies captain Heather Cottle and everyone enjoyed a delicious curry provided by chef Marcus and the catering team before having drinks on the terrace in the evening sunshine.

Local club matches have also begun. The seniors won 4.5-0.5 at home to Worlebury in the first round of the Somerset Bowl, gaining revenge for losing at Worlebury last year. There were wins for Tony Mccallum & Richard Young (4&3), Barrie Saggers & David Cox (6&5), Paul Turner & Ewan Caldwell (3&2) and Martin Cashnella & Phil Scully (2&1). Mark Moorfoot & Geoff Ogden halved their game. The next round will be against either the Channel Course or Isle of Wedmore.

In the first round of the Somerset Seniors Scratch competition, Bath were draw away to The Mendip and, midway through the match, held a 3-2 lead. However, Steve Francis and Martin Cashnella turned their games around - with the former winning on the 20th hole and the latter winning 1Up - to secure a 4-1 win. There were comfortable wins for Kelvin Green and Simon Freeman, while Simon Harris lost his game. Bath face Burnham & Berrow in the next round.

The men’s first team played their second side in the first match of this year’s Bristol & District Golf League, following the club’s simultaneous relegation and promotion to Division Five last season. The first team duly won and look forward their next game.

Bath has also been chosen as one of Golf Monthly’s 100 Hidden Gems for 2022. This celebrates courses across the UK and Ireland and Golf Monthly believes the club offers a great value and fantastic golfing experience. The list of the 2022 100 Hidden Gems is published in a special 44-page supplement that accompanies the May 2022 cover dated issue, which went on sale at the start of the month and across its digital platforms.
