Lionesses can inspire new women’s squad

-

Matt Abreu believes the Lionesses’ success in the Euros could have a positive effect for Bath City Women.

Abreu was appointed manager in June for the newly formed club, who will start their season on Sunday, September 4, in Somerset County Women’s League Division One.

The UEFA B qualified coach was Wells City assistant manager last season having previously coached with the likes of Larkhall Athletic and Paulton Rovers’ Development side. He will combine his new role with working in the community in Trowbridge at local schools.

“The amount of young girls coming forward wanting to play football is fantastic,” said Abreu.

“Some who came to our recruitment day were only 16.

“I like to think that the impact England Women had will be huge for the community and women’s football overall.

“I’ve said to those joining that they’re not coming to just play football for us – they’re coming to be an inspiration. My daughter is desperate to watch us play – she’s already inspired by the team and we haven’t even had a game yet.”

Matches will take place on Sunday afternoons at 2pm, with home fixtures at Twerton Park. Abreu confirmed they will have a few friendlies before the season opener.

“We’ve got about 15 registered and another ten who are looking to trial,” he said.

“It’s just a case now of everyone putting their best foot forward and being ready for that first match.

“The ones we’ve got now really want to go for it, they’ve got the desire to do well.”

The new players had a Sunday fitness experience at Rejuvenate, a gym owned by Bath City Men’s defender Joe Raynes.

“That wasn’t an easy session but Joe made it fun and was so encouraging,” said Abreu.

“Everyone came away having enjoyed it.

“We’ll be back on the grass doing football training on Wednesdays and it’s all coming together nicely.”
