Christian revival is evidence for case
What an interesting point Sally Page makes about what she suggests is a link between police numbers and obedience to God’s laws (28th July).
I am sure that many readers may dismiss her comments as some form of religious idealism but it is worth pointing out that there is anecdotal evidence in support of the point she makes.
It is reliably reported that, during the 1904 Christian revival in 1904, stealing and other offences became less and less.
Often a magistrate came to court and found there were no cases for him to try. People who had been careless about paying their bills or paying back money they had borrowed gave back all they owed.
People who had quarrelled forgave each other and were reconciled. These and many other examples demonstrate that such comments as your correspondent makes cannot easily be dismissed.
