Siblings among the trophies

-

Lansdown Golf Club’s Junior Open, played in glorious sunshine on Monday, proved to be quite a family affair with two pairs of siblings in the list of prize winners.

The club welcomed some outstanding young talent from across the region and the quality on show gave the watching club members much food for thought.

Overall winner, taking the Lansdown Trophy, was Summer Carash (3 handicap) from The Kendleshire. Carash returned the best gross score of 74, one-over-par, while younger sister Alicia scored nett 68 to win the best nett score by a visitor prize.

Lansdown brother and sister Edison and Lotti Butler also picked up trophies.

Edison won the Kite Cup for the best gross score from a home player with 82, while Lotti scored the best home nett score of 74 to claim the

Mike Beard Trophy.

Other prizewinners were Lewis Stalley (Brickhampton Court) with the second gross score of 74, one ahead of Daniel Townsend (Minchinhampton). Rosie Boyle (Long Ashton) came second in the nett competition with 70, one in front of Charlie Jenkins (Thornbury).

Junior coaching at the club continues on Saturday mornings and, later this week, there will be two full days of practice and coaching for youngsters on school holidays.

Club competitions continued with the Godfrey Cup, a team Bowmaker with two of fours scores to count. Winners were Iain Wright, Richard and Stephen Jackson & Terry Pocock with 92 points, after countback from William Crowley, Kenneth Wyatt, Steve Hillman & John Court. Graham and Lewis Pristo, Ian Carter & Matthew Harvey were third on 91.

Head professional James Lee’s annual Pro’s Day was fiercely contested, with Terry Bamford winning Division One on 41 points, one ahead of Dave Price with Bill Rose another point behind in third after countback. Jack Belcher won a high-scoring Division Two with an outstanding 48, two in front of John Court with Steve Jackson third on 42.

There were nearest the pin prizes on all five par 3s, won by Steve Hulcoop (5th), Edison Butler (8th), Kevin Cox (10th), Terry Bamford (12th) and Shaun Luther (14th).

Long-time member Alan Bickley celebrated a hole-in-one this week during a friendly game - holing out with this 25 degree rescue club on the 168-yard 12th.

Bickley said: “The ace came out of the blue. I wasn’t playing particularly well and, despite the hole-in-one, I still ended up buying the coffee.”

He admits this was not his first holein-one, having had three others in his 50-year golfing career – and he says there’s still time for him to make another one. Watch this space.
