Horror and hope in Ukrainian artists’ work
An award-winning art gallery is opening a new exhibition of Ukrainian art at the end of the month.
The Art Cohort in Newbridge will host the exhibition for almost three weeks from Monday August 29 until Thursday, September 15.
The Art Cohort champions emerging artists, displaying new artworks in their exhibition space, and showcasing work from local artists and makers in their art shop.
The group also runs art classes and workshops in their learning space.
“This series of posters have been created by Ukrainian artists that used to illustrate children’s books,” said Iuliia Budnik.
“The artists want to tell the world about Ukraine’s fight the best way they know how: through graphic art.
“To tell the whole world about our pain, the fear, the tears, the loss and confusion and the atrocities, but also our courage, our unconditional love of our homeland and the value of life, peace and security so brutally being destroyed.
“The horror of war can only be
understood through experience. We did not want this experience.
“Yet these posters also represent hope. For victory, for the reconstruction of Ukraine, for the future of our children in their homeland.
“It’s said the pen is mightier than the sword and that a picture is
worth a thousand words – never has both sayings been so true.”
A total of 30 posters by nine artists have been selected to make this collective exhibition possible.
