Repairs planned for balustrade damaged in crash

-

There are plans to repair the balustrade on Bath’s North Parade Road after it was partially destroyed by a car crash.

At around 9pm on June 20, a vehicle ploughed through the wall and fell four metres into the Grade Ii-listed gardens below. It landed on its roof and a man who was trapped inside had to be freed by firefighters.

He was then taken to hospital but was not thought to have any serious injuries. The road was closed while the car was recovered and reopened shortly afterwards.

Since then, the balustrade has remained in its battered state and been blocked off with barriers. Now, the Highways Department has applied to the council for permission to repair the wall.

While some of the masonry will be replaced, some bits of the original balustrade – like the handrail – were salvaged and can be repaired. This will make it easier to match up the new masonry with the old.

However, one part of the handrail was so badly damaged it will have to be completely replaced.

You can view the plans for the balustrade’s repair on the council’s planning website until September 16. Visit https://bit. LY/3K2AK7T
