1,300 calls to fire service in week

Firefighte­rs working in the Avon area received more than 1,300 calls in a week as the region entered a heatwave.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) revealed a hectic seven days between August 8 and August 14.

Maximum temperatur­es remained above 30C for much of the week, leading to many grass fires and water-related incidents.

AFRS has revealed that between August 8 and August 14 it received 1,306 calls. These calls included 212 fires, 155 false alarms, 101 nonfire incidents alongside hundreds of other incidents.

Major call-outs for AFRS included a huge field fire near Chipping Sodbury. Crews from Bath attended as 30 acres of field went up in flames.

Firefighte­rs also attended a house fire in Knowle West, Bristol. One person and two dogs were rescued by crews at the scene.

Fire crews also attended a midnight rescue operation in Westonsupe­r-mare. A member of the public got stuck in the mud on the popular Weston beach.
