Bath clinch title in beating local rivals

Bath 1st XI played host to Lansdown 1st XI at North Parade in a match that offered them the chance to be crowned Premier One champions.

-

Lansdown won the toss and elected to ask Bath to bat first, but the Bath openers got off to a fine start, putting on a partnership of 105 before Brad Porteous was out for an excellent 55.

Fellow opener, Jack Scrivens then continued to take the score up to 187 before he was the fourth batter out for a powerful 86.

Tim Rouse (51) then batted well with the middle and lower order, who all contributed with double figure scores to take the Bath total up to 297-8 from their 50 overs – leaving Lansdown with a required run rate of almost six an over to win the match.

Lansdown’s reply was built around a run a ball century from opener Noah Davis (103), and 47 from number three, Connor Brown and when he was out to the bowling of Paul Muchall with the score on 152 in the 30th over, the game looked in the balance.

However, the return of Muchall (3-49) to the attack, alongside Brad Porteous (4-40) proved to be the winning formula and Lansdown’s innings tailed away as they fell short by 45 runs with their innings closing on 252-9.

This win ensured that Bath’s unbeaten record in the league remains intact and they have now been crowned champions of Premier One as they’re 63 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Potterne CC with only two matches remaining.

Bath 2nds faced Bradley Stock CC 1st XI on Saturday at Bradley Stoke Cricket Club.

Skipper Kester Moseley won the toss and elected field, but the Bradley Stoke openers started well and built a partnership of 64 before Matt Peach went for 25.

Further wickets began to fall off the excellent bowling of Kester Moseley (2-27) and John Bean (2-21) but then number six, Daniel Laver hit 65 off 86 balls to keep Bradley Stoke’s innings powering forward. In the end, Bradley Stoke finished on 248-9 from their 50 overs.

Bath’s reply stuttered with the loss of Hugo Morgan (5) and Benjamin Church (0) early, and although Henry Allen (53) and Kester Moseley (20) batted well together, when Moseley went Bath continued to lose batters regularly and in the end they were bowled out for 148 in the 39th over, for Bradley Stoke to win the match by 100 runs.

Bath CC 3rd XI travelled the short distance to Combe Park to play Lansdown CC 2nd XI on Saturday.

Bath skipper, Ted Roe won the toss and elected to field first and this initially proved the right decision as opener, Max Kerr picked up the early wickets of Adam Carlin (8) and Dan Veal (0).

But, opener, James Pitman (60) and number four, Sam Athay (59) helped repair the innings and with all of the middle to lower order batters contributing double figure scores, Lansdown finished their innings on a competitive 229-7.

Bath’s reply struggled from the start as they found themselves 15-3, which soon became 50-6.

Although Ted and Mike Roe both contributed top scores of 28 and 30 not out the rest of the Bath batting line up were blown away by the Lansdown attack, as Bath were bundled out for 110 from just 29 overs for Lansdown to win the match by 119 runs.

Bath CC 4th XI played hosts to Bradley Stoke CC 2nd XI at the Brownsword ground on Saturday.

Bradley Stoke won the toss and elected to bat first and the openers quickly got into their work before the introduction of Jonathan Green into the attack led to the wicket of Michael Tromans, bowled for 28.

Fellow opener, Gareth Price continued to bat well, narrowly missing out on a half century when he was out off the bowling of Mathan Balasubramaniyan (3-40) for 49.

Wickets then began to steadily fall with Harry Eccott (35) the main contributor down the order as Bradley Stoke finished their innings on 241-8 from their 40 overs.

Bath’s reply was built around two significant innings. Opener Daniel Hope scored 67 before being bowled by Wayne Passmore and skipper, Jonathan Green batting at number six, scored 48.

However, as regular wickets fell around these two batters Bath fell 35 runs short as they were bowled out for 206 in the last over. This was a good performance by the Bath side considering Bradley Stoke are top of the Bristol & District Fourth Division.

Bath CC Wanderers had a commanding victory over Devizes CC Women’s 1st XI on Sunday.

Electing to bat first, the Wanderers batted very positively from the start with captain and opener, Emma Godman scoring a run a ball 47 before being bowled by Dani Tilsey.

The rest of the Wanderers batters then played in similar fashion, all scoring at over a one hundred strike rate with Isla Thomson scoring 55, and Katie Dolman (74) and Charlotte Philips (117) finishing not out at the end of the innings, as the Wanderers amassed a huge score of 327-2 from their 40 overs.

Despite an unbeaten innings of 81 from opener Maxine Blythin, Devizes never looked like they were going to get close to the Bath score and in the end, they fell 196 runs short on 131-8. Pick of the Wanderers bowlers were Emily White (3-20) and Maddie White (2-14).

This win has put the Wanderers top of the South West Women’s Regional Premier League on net run rate.

Timsbury 1st XI were once again unable to make the most of a promising start losing by six wickets away to high fliers Frenchay in the Bristol and District League Senior Division.

Batting first the visitors reached 87-2 but a mid-order collapse saw them eventually dismissed for 151 with 5 lbw decisions not helping the cause.

Mark Sage continued his return to form with a fluent 58 at the top of the order but apart from a defiant 25 not out late in the innings from Greg Passingham there were no other notable contributions. Captain Alex Stell took 4-30 for the home side.

Frenchay were made to work hard for their victory but an obdurate Mike Donaldson (55) and Eddie Williams (38 not out) saw them home with plenty to spare.

Sam Hoddinott with 2-33 was Timsbury’s most successful bowler.

There was no better news for Timsbury 2nd XI who were beaten by 7 wickets at home to Frenchay 2nd XI in the Bristol and District League Division 5.

Batting first Timsbury finished their 40 overs on 179-7 with Adam Brinkworth anchoring the innings

with 54. There were also useful contributions from Joe Kinnear (30) and skipper Ben Hosford (21).

Oli Hulbert made an early breakthrough for the home side but opener Joe Moss carried his bat for 84 not out and with good support from Will Stabb (40 not out) and Max Richards (28) led his side to victory.

The one positive feature of the weekend saw Timsbury 3rd XI win by nine wickets away to Thornbury 4th XI in the Bristol and District League Division 13.

Acting captain Neil Hulford took 3-20, Martin Richards 2-13 and Chris Rawlings 2-8 as the home side were hustled out for a mere 79. Hulford (29 not out), Cory Versfeld (28) and Dan Nesbitt (19 not out) then took their side home in just over 13 overs.
