Ed picks up another title

Ed Butler claimed victory over Tom Morris in the final of the prestigiou­s Scratch Cup at Lansdown, adding the title to the Club Championsh­ip which he won in June.

The Scratch Cup is a seeded scratch knock-out competitio­n for the best sixteen gross scores in the Club Championsh­ip. Ed took the lead with a birdie at the first and, although Tom fought back with some great golf, the match ended on the 15th with Ed five holes up with three to play.

Lansdown’s team in the Gloucester­shire Golf Union’s Senior Scratch Foursomes competitio­n had a 2-1 win over The Kendleshir­e to claim a place in the finals day to be held at Knowle Golf Club in October.

The team pairings were Steve Ashley and Simon Hale; Ken and Eddie Watson; and Andy Pothecary and Alan Veitch.

The Chairman’s Putter was played on Saturday with Lee Ricketts taking the overall honours with 43 points (on countback).

Divisional winners were Tony Gough in Division 1 with 42 points, followed by Steve Book (41 points), on countback from Barry Frayling.

Steve Brunton topped Division 2 with 43 points, two shots ahead of Paul Eddleston in 2nd place.

Stephen Coombs was 3rd with 39 points. Top of Division 3 was Matthew Harvey with 39 points, with Harry Newall in 2nd place with 37 points, and Dave Wherlock 3rd with 36 points.

The Frieda Bowl is one of the ladies’ oldest and most coveted trophies played for over three medal rounds, a week apart, with the best two of the three net scores taking the trophy.

This year’s winner was Cathy Gilson who had two very good rounds, with net scores of 69 and 63 – giving her a two-round total of 132.

Sue Fereday was runner-up with 71 and 66, totalling 137, and Clare Mornement was one shot behind in third place with 68 and 70, total 138.

Cathy Gilson won a second trophy this month, along with her husband, Andy, with a score of 43 points in the Mixed Foursomes Loving Cup competitio­n.

Club Captain Margaret Ruxton came 2nd with Edison Butler with 39 points.

Another pairs competitio­n, the Elms Trophy, which is a Greensomes Medal, was won by Matthew Harvey and Barry Norris with a nett score of 66.

■ Bath

This week’s competitio­n results start with Bath ladies who played in the James Cup medal last week.

The winner of division 1 was Stephanie Moorfoot with a fine nett 66 with Angela Frith second on nett 69 and Sandra Nott third with nett 71.

Top of division 2 was Sue Morton-jenkins on nett 68 with Anne Hitchin second on nett 69 and Jeannie Willis third on nett 72.

Division 3 was won by Sue Thomas on nett 68 with Lynne Swainston second on nett 69 and Jennifer Catchpole third on nett 70. The overall winner was Stephanie Moorfoot.

Bath ladies also played in a 9 hole stableford competitio­n, the the winner on 19 points was Barbara Miles, just ahead on countback from Helen Oliver also on 19 points with June Harrison third on 18 points.

Last Saturday Bath men played in a fourball bowmaker stableford with the best two scores counting on each hole.

The format promised high scoring and so it turned out with the winning team of Graham Duckworth, Mark Daniels, Paul Edgell and Anthony Jones scoring and impressive 91 points.

Second with a fine score of 90 points were Stephen Roache, Phil Scilly, Christophe­r Knight and Joshua Knight, Third place with 88 points were Rod Davis, Paul Suchley, Chris Loveluck and Rob Burdett, just ahead on countback from Simon Freeman, Stephen Palmer, Chris Knight and Ron Ives with the same score.
