HOTEL OF THE WEEK

POLURRIAN ON THE LIZARD Mullion, Cornwall

- By Joni Mann

Where and Why

Many hotels claim a sea view but few can rival the expanse of water that stretches away from the Polurrian on the Lizard.

From our dual-aspect room at the three-star clifftop hotel we could see for miles along the curve of Cornwall’s Mount’s Bay without even getting out of bed.

Our spacious, bright double boasted a sparkling white ensuite with Elemis toiletries, robes and pool towels.

Refurbishment of the 41 bedrooms by the new owner is under way, with a restaurant makeover also in the pipeline.

Food is served in the smart dining room as well as the laidback, glass-fronted Vista Lounge. Both venues look out over the beautiful grounds to that stunning seascape.

On the menu

The all-day menu pleasingly features plenty of seafood alongside favourites such as steak, burgers and freshly baked pizzas. My partner’s whole sole with roasted new potatoes, dill and caper beurre noisette (£24) was very well received, followed by dark chocolate delice and armadillo ice cream (£8.50).

I went for a gluten-free pizza with a thick cheese, tomato and mushroom topping enriched with truffle (£15). Delicious.

Breakfast features a buffet of cereals, fruit, toast and more, plus a selection of hot dishes.

While you’re there

Sand and clear blue water await at secluded Polurrian Cove below the hotel. Or take a dip in the hotel’s outdoor pool or hit the tennis court. For more R&R, visit the Polurrian Health Club, with its pool, gym and Elemis treatments.
