Escape with Kate Bush or the Bard at The Mission
A sparkling selection of enticing entertainment has been designed to provide distraction from the world stage by inviting audiences to their local stage this autumn.
Talented artists are on hand at The Mission Theatre, Bath to help you forget the outside world with shows including:
■ The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin Mcdonagh. The cobwebs of deceit threaten a couple’s plans, and dark simmering tensions between mother and daughter force their way to the surface with heart-breaking and disturbing consequences. Tuesday, September 6, to Saturday, September 10. Tickets £15.
■ Snapshots is a dazzling evening of funny, emotional, uplifting personal stories told through dialogue, dance and music. Seizing The Day Company is a collective of singers, dancers and actors who are creating great live performances inspired by their own lives. Tuesday, September 13, to Thursday, September 15. Tickets £10.
■ From the Forties to the Noughties is a charming show of songs, memories, poems and amusing stories from the 1940s to present times. Performed and devised by Bath-born professional actor Clive Woodward and talented singing duo Razz, it is lively, and fun while also reflecting the more emotional side of life. Friday, October 7, to Saturday, October 8. Tickets £15
■ Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. Duke Orsino is in love with Lady Olivia, but she won’t have anything to do with suitors. Viola is shipwrecked and believes her twin brother Sebastian to be dead. There’s drunkenness, frivolity and cross-dressing aplenty. Monday, October 17, to Tuesday, October 18. Tickets £16.
■ Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare. This sparkling farce is a roller coaster of wit, romance, physical comedy and mistaken identities as two sets of twins cause mayhem in ancient Ephesus when their lives and loves become almost inextricably tangled. Wednesday, October 19, to Thursday, October 20. Tickets £14.
■ Simply Kate Bush, a piano/ vocal tribute performed by Lisamarie Walters, pictured inset, is back by popular demand and offers a rare opportunity to see and hear the music of Kate Bush performed accurately and affectionately with plenty of love and emotion. It captures the atmosphere of Kate’s songs from albums such as The Kick Inside, Lionheart, Never For Ever, The Dreaming, Hounds Of Love and The Sensual World. Friday, October 21. Tickets £16.
■ If It’s To Break by Chris Richards and Jake Rayner Blair. After debuting to rave reviews at the Bath Fringe Festival 2022, Bitterroot return with If It’s To Break, a dark, atmospheric piece exploring self-acceptance and failure in art. Friday, November 4, to Saturday, November 5. Tickets £8.
■ King Lear: The Musical by Shona Rachel Waterhouse. Shakespeare’s broody tragedy takes an outrageously silly turn, as six actors deploy wittily rewritten pop classics, chaotically daft comedy, and an array of highly haphazard props to recount the tale of a megalomaniac family who make the Kardashians look like Little House on the Prairie. Thursday, November 10, to Saturday, November 12. Tickets £10. Concessions £8.
■ Racing Demon by David Hare. Part of a trilogy looking at different British institutions, this fascinating glimpse into the working lives of the clergy remains fiercely topical today. Racing Demon, written by Next Stage Theatre Company’s patron David Hare, is a challenging production that is not to be missed. Bob Constantine directs, with Brian Fisher as the Rev Espy. Tuesday, November 29, to Saturday, December 3. Tickets £15.
■ The Gondoliers was Gilbert and Sullivan’s last major success when it opened on December 7, 1889.
The show boasts some of Sullivan’s greatest musical hits and has all the classic topsy-turvy ingredients and characters of pantomimic proportions to make it a wonderful pre-christmas treat for all the family. Tuesday, December 6, to Saturday, December 10. Tickets £15.
