Selfish cyclists give others a bad name

-

On Sunday, around lunchtime, I was blackberrying along the canal path, starting at Widcombe lock, where I saw a large notice showing a “5” in a red circle.

This, I thought, was encouraging as I understand pedestrians have priority, and walking speed is about five miles an hour.

However, two male cyclists clad in cycling gear rushed past at different times, with no warning bell, weaving past other pedestrians. I shouted at them as they sped past about safety of pedestrians being the priority and they both reacted with gestures and loud, rude indistinct replies.

I understand cyclists come bottom of the priority list on the canal path – after boats and horses. They should be aware of this.

This has been a problem for many

years along the canal, with selfish cyclists who like to make up their own rules and regulations to suit themselves.

Later in the afternoon I saw an elderly cyclist jump the red lights turning onto the London Road and told him I’d seen him.

Of course there are lots of very good cyclists, but these incidents give cycling a bad name – not to mention cyclists riding on the pavement. I think I see one, if not two almost every day in Bath, and I

always speak to them, reminding them of the law.

Many others agree with me that this is all symptomatic of an increasingly godless, narcissistic society.
